When I was digging around for something crazy to shoot in San Francisco, it only took a couple hours and the Google search "cult foods SF" to stumble upon the Frankaroni — franks (hot dogs) meet macaroni. Anyone who was obsessed with mac 'n cheese as a kid (um, all of us?) knows that chopped hot dogs are perhaps the most popular mix-in. I happen to think this is cruel; I like my mac basic. But given how it's such a nostalgic combo for people, I wanted to give it a try.
The people (some might say mad geniuses) behind the Frankaroni are 4505 Burgers & BBQ. They got their start making speciality hot dogs and selling them in packs before opening a food stand in SF's Ferry Building. When "Frankaroni" would get on the specials board, the line would start forming. They knew were onto something.

Today, 4505 sells about 150 Frankaronis a day. And it makes total sense: This country is OBSESSED with mac' n cheese. Around the globe, we buy seven million boxes a week (!) and we try to sneak in mac to pretty much everything: pizza, grilled cheese, even burger buns.
Like anything fried with melty cheese, the Frankaroni is ridiculously delicious. (Yes, I guess I do like hot dogs in my mac.) Next time you're in SF, be sure to try one for yourself.
