Making them isn't as hard as we had feared. And no, you don't need a one-eyed boook for the formula. However, if you have a candy thermometer, it'll definitely work some magic here. (Guessing when the corn syrup, sugar, and water are nearing to hard crack stage is not fun.) A candy thermometer makes it easy to achieve glossy and shiny dipped apples.

But before you start boiling any sugar, you need to dye the mixture a blackish purple. Gel food coloring works best for an intense color. And before you even dye the mixture, you should go searching for sticks. No, I'm not kidding. Long branches are so much cooler (and creepier) than lollipop sticks.
