Everyone knows that when it comes to Halloween, it's all about the sweets. Sometimes though, I get candy fatigue and crave something a little less cavity-causing. This cake is perfect for any spooky celebration, and it's much easier to make than it might appear. Plus, if you're really committed to the spook, you complete the look with this amazing plastic cleaver.
To achieve the cake's blood red interior, nothing is more perfect than a good ol' red velvet cake mix. Split one box between two 8 inch cake pans for two layers. Next, make the frosting. We went classic with our standard cream cheese frosting recipe — it's pretty unbeatable. Make sure to spread it nice and smooth on the top so the blood can form a shiny smooth layer on top of it.
Next comes the most important part — the blood! It's a combination of water, cornstarch, corn syrup and red food coloring. When it's nice and thick, spread it on the cake and let the drips do the work! We finished ours with a plastic cleaver but feel to run wild with the props. (Maybe a kitchen knife? Perhaps some creepy insects?) Guaranteed it'll be the spookiest cake at the party!
